Recently the solid state drive market is an intense battleground where many manufacturers compete to offer models with a perfect blend of price, performance and reliability. Samsung is one of many manufacturers who strive to draw your attention to their products. Today we will be reviewing one of their most popular drives, the Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD.
The Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD is a 2.5″ drive which boasts up to 540 MB/s sequential reads through the SATA 6GB/s interface. This drive is partnered with a fantastic five year warranty, further reinforcing the quality of this solid state drive and assuring us that it is intended to last. Like most drives, the Samsung 850 EVO is backwards compatible with SATA 2 however installing the SSD in a SATA 2 system will impact the performance of this drive considerably.
This solid state drive sports a basic design on the front which simply contains the Samsung logo. It’s always pleasant to see computer hardware which steers clear of bright colours and flashy lights however, in modern systems it can easily become hidden due to other components such as the graphics card stealing the show.
Samsung boasts performance of up to 540 MB/s sequential reads and 520 MB/s sequential writes. We decided to put this solid state drive to the test and compare it with a range of other drives in CrystalDiskMark.
As expected, the Samsung 850 EVO drive out performs our other contenders and it surprisingly exceeds Samsung’s rated reads and writes. In sequential reads the drive scored 554MB/s while in sequential writes it scored 526MB/s. If you have your operating system installed on your solid state drive, random reads and writes become far more important. Thankfully, the Samsung 850 EVO offers excellent performance in this test, continuing to outperform our other solid state drives.
In conclusion, the Samsung 850 EVO 250GB solid state drive is a strong performer which comes with an impressive five year warranty. It scored well in CrystalDiskMark and outperformed the other drives we tested. We wish the design was a little more appealing, though solid state drives are made for performance, not for beauty contests. If you are looking at picking up a new solid state drive, we can strongly recommend the Samsung 850 EVO 250GB drive.
